Any Good? -
Are whole house surge protectors any good?
Yes - Whole house surge protectors can be good, but they should be accompanied by smaller surge protectors further down the line. Some kind of a cascading effect is best. A whole house surge protector at the main panel followed by power strips with built-in surge protection for your electronics.
In order to install a whole house surge protector, you must have at least two spare breaker slots in your panel and the panel needs to have some open wall space on one side or the other. We will be mounting the surge suppressor which is about the same size is a shoe box.
Some companies who sell these units also include harmonic filtering and other extras. It may be the coming thing and so far I've installed one. However I do not believe the sales pitches about saving energy. The energy saving electronics are already installed in most modern appliances. There is a demo unit in a cast that has two amp-meters and switching so as to show the draw straight from the mains and alternatively via the surge arrester power quality box. They are using a very old inefficient type of motor for this demonstration
Previously I thought surge protection wasn't very necessary in San Francisco because we almost never get any lightning. I'm all the wiser now sits sometime around 2000 6 lead it have lightning and I lost my modem power supply Internet have been something else all at one time.
