How a GFI Works.
How a GFI breaker works. I did some research, (busted it open etc.)
As you may know if you put and Amp-probe around one of the two wires of a circuit it will give you a reading in amps. Take the Amp-probe and clamp it around both wires of a circuit or even all three wires of a 3-wire circuit and the reading will be zero. A GFI or a GFI breaker checks and if its measuring any more than 5 mA of current going out but not returning then it turns off. That's it.
I tell my clients that a GFI kills the power instead of killing them. Then I have to explain that 110 volts doesn't usually kill you, unless you're on the ladder and fall on your head or your in a bathtub and you can't escape the voltage and current from a radio or hairdryer that falls into the bath tub, or you are standing in water or some thing, but they get the idea and it is a pretty easy sell.
